James Burks (@JamesBurksArt), author illustrator of Bird and Squirrel on Ice (@GraphixBooks) book 2 in the Bird and Squirrel graphic novel series, stops by to talk about his path from ComicCon to kidlit, the effect of an animation background on visual storytelling, and creating characters who emote from the page.
James, I fell in love with your work as soon as I read BIRD & SQUIRREL ON THE RUN (before your appearance on the #SharpSchu book club). You are just so nice, not to mention talented. It seems to me that artists with animation background, when illustrating picture books, have that extra touch of animated feel in what I call (for over 20 years now) PB illustration: "still animation." It's so obvious to me, I can usually tell as soon as I see a cover, and certainly once I open the book. You are super-skilled at what you do and I'm so glad you made your way into the world of picture books and graphic novels :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for the great interview, guys! :D
Thanks, Donna Marie. That's very kind of you to say. I hope to keep making good books and bringing a little life to everything I do.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will, James :D
